Washington (AP) — Congressman Nancy Pelosi is pushing back San Francisco’s conservative Catholic archbishop’s decision to refuse communion over support for the right to abortion.
Pelosi states that he respects people’s dissenting views, but not when imposing them on others.
Democrats in California say she comes from a large family with many members who oppose abortion.
She says, “I respect people’s views about it.”
But we don’t respect imposing it on others. Pelosi spoke at MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Tuesday.
Last month, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone said he would refuse communion after vowing to codify the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade ruling, which establishes the constitutional right to abortion.
Cordileone said he had told Pelosi to stop talking about the Catholic faith or to refuse to support the right to abortion.
Cordileone spoke frankly about President Joe Biden and other politicians who supported the right to abortion to be denied communion.
However, authority on this issue is left to each bishop.
Cardinal Wilton Gregory, Archbishop of Washington, said he welcomed Biden’s acceptance of communion there.
