Pentagon investigating deadly airstrikes in Syria – Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky

The Pentagon announced on Monday that it would investigate the March 2019 airstrikes in Syria. This killed more than 60 civilians.

The Pentagon says the airstrikes were part of the US and Syrian Democratic Forces to cripple Syria’s ISIS.

“The investigation included civilian casualties resulting from the incident, compliance with international law of war, record keeping and reporting procedures, and an assessment of whether the mitigations identified in previous investigations of the incident were actually implemented effectively. Includes; whether accountability measures are appropriate; and finally whether authorities, procedures or processes should change, “said John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin tapped Michael Garrett, the head of the Army General Army, to lead the investigation. In the process, Garrett also looks at previous reports.

The New York Times reports that the Inspector General’s general report on civilian casualties was submitted to the House of Representatives in the spring, but did not mention the case at Al-Baghuz.
