Greenville, South Carolina (WSPA) — A group of people gathered in downtown Greenville called for the eradication of gun violence.

The rally was held on Saturday by South Carolina for reform. The rally took place a few days after the killings of 21 people at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

“Why do children have to be barricaded like animals to go to school?” Asked one attendee.

The group called for a change in gun law.

“We support bipartisan gun control measures such as common sense, universal background checks, and bans on assault rifles and large magazines,” said event organizer Hayden Ray.

“We don’t want your gun,” said political activist Lee Turner. “We are not coming for your gun. I want you to have a gun. I just don’t want to be shot by your gun.”

Following the shooting in Yuvalde, the National Rifle Association issued the following statement:

We would like to express our deepest sympathies to the families and victims involved in this horrific and evil crime. On behalf of the members, we pay tribute to the courage of those who have provided support and services, such as school officials and first responders.

Investigations are underway and the facts are still clear, but we recognize that this was the act of a lonely and confused criminal. When we meet in Houston, we look back on these events, pray for the victims, recognize patriotic members, and pledge to double our commitment to keep the school safe.

Gun violence is personal to those who attended Saturday’s rally.

“There was a shooting in Anderson’s town building [County] Only a few years ago, “Ray said. “At that time, I was a junior high school student. I used the yellow code. I didn’t know what was going on. Since then, gun violence has been at the heart of my heart.”

Some of the gathered people said they wanted people on both sides of the problem to be able to get together.

“We need to stop thinking that the problem will go away or improve, without taking precautions or sitting at the table with us,” Turner said.
