Military members are now entitled to 12 weeks of parental leave, double what they had before. memo It went into effect Wednesday from the Department of Defense.

The 12-week period covers both birthing and non-birthing parents, including parents of recently adopted children and members using a surrogate, no later than December 27, 2022 Applies to parents of children born or adopted.

Eligible members must have been in active or reserve service for at least 12 months.

Birth parents may also recover from labor “if such leave is specifically recommended in writing by the birth parent’s health care provider and approved by the unit commander to address a diagnosed medical condition.” A recovery period is also given for note state.

Twelve weeks of parental leave must be taken within the first year of the child’s birth or adoption.

Military personnel who adopt children who already live with them are not eligible for leave. Foster parents are entitled to 12 weeks of leave when they first bring the child home, but no additional leave if they decide to officially adopt the child.

Parents may also take leave in increments of at least seven days, and may take additional parental leave for multiple qualifying events if the time between events is at least 72 hours.
