Washington — Former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman and Secretary of State Colin Powell died of complications from COVID-19, his family said Monday. He was 84 years old.

According to Powell’s family, he was fully vaccinated and was being treated at the Walter Reed National Medical Center.

“We have lost a remarkable loving husband, father, grandfather, and great American,” the family wrote in a statement.

Complete statement:

“Former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Colin L. Powell, died this morning due to complications of Covid 19. He was fully vaccinated at the Walterlead National Medical Center. We thank the medical staff for their compassionate treatment. We have lost a notable and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great American. “

Powell was the first African-American to chair the Joint Chiefs of Staff and later Secretary of State, and was unanimously confirmed in 2001.

He continued his compelling claim in front of the United Nations about military action against Iraq, claiming that Saddam Hussein was producing weapons of mass destruction. A war broke out, Hussein was defeated and killed, and Iraq was destabilized, but no such weapon was found.

Powell consistently defended his support for the Iraq War. However, lifelong Republicans made little use of Trump, supporting Hillary Clinton in 2016 and speaking in support of Biden at the 2020 Democratic National Convention. He left the Republican Party after the assault on the US Capitol on January 6.
