Virginia Beach, Virginia (WAVY) — Virginia Beach celebrates Unity Week with several action-oriented initiatives.
Unity Week, October 17-23, aims to celebrate individual differences and move towards the acceptance of positive and receptive individuals.
Community members planning to celebrate the event are encouraged to visit VBgov.com/unity Select at least three actions to take by November 30th.
Participants can choose from the following options:
- Option 1: Identify pronouns
Proper use of gender identity terms, including pronouns, indicates courtesy, acceptance, and respect. Residents can add the preferred pronoun to their email signature, social media profile, or zoom screen name label.
- Option 2: Watch the video
Residents can choose from a variety of videos, including the three videos above VBgov.com/unity Featured on “Expanding LGBTQ + Acceptance on Coming Out Day”. “Islam and Judaism: Everything you wanted to know but was afraid to ask”; and “Race: A Conversation on Solutions for Sustainable Change.” The average length of viideos is about 15 minutes.
- Option 3: Participate in the event
Some Unity Week events include a virtual panel discussion on unity through the lens of public health and ethnicity. Discuss first-hand pandemic-related inequality, as well as the Unity Line Dancing Party hosted by Parks & Recreation.
- One of the events is the adaptation of Ibram X. Kendi and his youth and teens.
- Option 4: Wear orange
October 20th is Unity Day, a representative event of National Bullying Prevention Month. On this day, you can express your support by wearing orange, which is recognized as an anti-bullying color.
