A man died after a truck driver attacked a spectator at the start of a pride parade in the south Florida According to officials, another person was seriously injured on Saturday.
According to WSVN-TV, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis appeared to be part of the Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride Parade, but suddenly accelerated when told: He said he had collided with the victim.
Trantalis said he believed it was a deliberate attack. Justin Knight, president of Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, whose T-shirt logo was suspected, said it was, to his knowledge, a “tragic accident” and not an attack on the LGBTQ community. He told local media that the suspect was “a member of the choir” and the injured were members.
Fort Lauderdale police detective Ali Adamson said authorities are investigating “all possibilities” with the help of the FBI, but whether he believes the case is intentional. Did not mention.
The officer is talking to the driver. It is unknown if he was charged. Wilton Manners police tweeted that the public was not at risk.
According to Trantalis, the vehicle arrived within a few inches of Democratic US Congressman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who was in a convertible at the parade.
“The parade has just begun and I saw people ready to move side by side. Suddenly, this white pickup truck ran through the crowd, and Congressman Wasserman Schultz’s car almost disappeared in inches. It went unnoticed and broke through the gate, “he said.
In a statement, Wasserman Schultz said she was safe, but “deeply shaken and destroyed the loss of life.” “I’m very sad about what happened at this celebration,” she said. “May the memory of the lost life be for the blessing.”
“In honor of all involved, the parade has been canceled and a thorough investigation is underway,” said Scott Newton, mayor of Wilton Manors, just north of Fort Lauderdale.
Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said in a statement. “The authorities are still collecting information, but we know that two individuals marching to celebrate inclusion and equality were attacked by a vehicle. This tragedy is me and my team. It happened at the feet of, and we are devastating to witness this horrific event. “
Audience Christina Curry told Sun-Sentinel in South Florida. “Suddenly, the truck spun loudly and broke through the fence … it was definitely a deliberate act across the lane.”
Photos and videos from the scene show Wasserman Schultz weeping in the scene. A Wasserman Schultz spokesman did not immediately return an email asking for comment.
June is Pride Month. A police attack on gay patrons at the Stonewall Inn in New York in June 1969 led to an uprising of LGBTQ Americans, triggering a gay rights movement.
