President Biden today restored the border between Bears Years in Utah and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. These have been dramatically reduced under former President Trump. He also imposed fishing restrictions at the third monument off New England.

Former President Barack Obama created Bears Ears National Monument in 2017 shortly before his resignation, but the Trump administration reduced the size of the protected area by 85%. Today, with the restoration of Biden and a slight increase, including 11,200 acres added during the Trump era change, the monument will be about 1.3 million acres.

Native American tribes have marked today as a victory in many years of fighting to protect the Bears Year.

This is what Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, the first member of the US indigenous cabinet, commented at the White House today.

“Bears Ears is a living landscape,” Harland said. “When I went there, I felt the warmth and joy of my ancestors who have taken care of this special place since ancient times.”

The rugged desert terrain of southeastern Utah is filled with towering red rock formations, important Native American ruins, a vast field of sage-colored scrubbrushes, and of course the Bears Yearbute, which is the origin of its name. ..

Here are some of the photos of NPR photographer Claire Harbage visiting the area on a report trip in July 2021.
