Pilot killed in plane crash at Porterville airport identified as off-duty Air National Guard pilot – Fresno, California

Porterville, CA (KFSN)-A plane crashed at Porterville Municipal Airport on Monday afternoon, identifying a dead pilot.

Fresno’s 144th Combat Wing has identified the pilot as Lieutenant Colonel Billy “Taz” Sullivan. He was the only one on board.

In a statement, they said, “He was at the pinnacle of his Air Force and aviation career and was responsible for the true future of the 144th Combat Wing.

The Federal Aviation Administration states that the single-engine Van’s RV-6A crashed at about 2:20 pm shortly after takeoff.

The plane broke out on the ground near the end of the runway. The fire brigade in Porterville responded and put out the fire.

According to officials, this was a private jet.

According to the FAA, Sullivan was about to return to the airport when the accident occurred.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash.

The airport was closed for at least 12 hours.
