Aspen, Colorado — Aspen restaurant Meat and Cheese does not offer the numbers you are accustomed to at this time of the year.

“That’s a shame,” said Sam Hayes, Meat and Cheese Restaurant Manager.

On Monday, the Pitkin County Health Commission decided to return to Rebel Red this weekend with the state’s COVID-19 dial. This will close all indoor dining. This change only adds to the restaurant pandemic issue.

“To be honest, I’m really tired today. It’s because of the amount of energy we all put in. There’s certainly a lot.”

Pitkin County is one of the highest incidences in the state, which prompted relocation. But for areas that are thriving in the tourism industry, this really hurts.

“We really felt it was time to take more important steps to reduce that incident rate,” said John Peacock, Pitkin County Manager.

It’s not a move that the county wanted to make, especially in the middle of the tourist season.

“This is a particularly painful time for our business community to do limited activities, as these are our busiest times,” Peacock said.

More than 45,000 tourists have signed in since the county began mandating affidavits from all tourists in December.

“The mountains are still open — everyone is out there. Still, the hotels are still open. They are still rocking,” Hayes said.

However, the number of visitors from overseas is declining sharply, and you can access the slopes without reservation.

“There is space because travel restrictions are too strict,” said Jeff Hanle, vice president of communications at Aspensky.

Hanle said there was no need for additional traffic restrictions in the mountains. This is useful even though you need to stop eating indoors at the resort.

“It has less impact on us than it does on restaurants in downtown. It’s the owner of the restaurant, but it’s the employees,” Hanle said.

The impact of closing indoor dining is widespread and is affecting the accommodation business in Pitkin County.

“The lodge has the lowest number of people since it reopened in winter. This is not good news for everyone,” said Aspen Lodge manager Allison Campbell.

The Aspen accommodation industry has caught up with the tourists who are still coming. Campbell is in favor of the decision, even if the numbers are small.

“That’s right. That’s really the only thing. We are a very small community and we have a very small hospital,” Campbell said.

Campbell said he understands that the short-term effects can be somewhat painful.

“It’s bad to be in the red, but we’re going to fix it,” Campbell said. “I think we’re in the right position as a community, but I think it’s okay to come here.”

Restaurant owners want state approval for a five-star program. However, the number of COVID-19s must be reduced by two weeks before the approved restaurant is open.

“It’s very disappointing, and it’s a kind of sadness,” Hayes said.

Pitkin County officials said it was a tough call, but they hope it helps avoid even more severe winters and springs.

“No one likes what’s going on, but we have to be healthy,” Campbell said.
