1st floor Chris Library – UNO’s Alum Chuck Hagel was a US Senator (NE-R) from 1997 to 2009 and a US Secretary of Defense from 2013 to 2015. When he left his US Senate, he donated his record to UNO. They became US Senator Chuck Hagel Archives. His collection includes materials on Nebraska’s aviation, railroads, trucks, highways and waterways, a small sample of which is shown on this display.

Airplanes, trains, waterways: Nebraska Senator Hegel and Transportation Starting with aviation, it focuses on local aviation services, Omaha and Lincoln airports, and national laws affecting state air transport. The exhibition continues to see the three major rivers of Nebraska, Missouri, Niobrara, and Pratt. Senator Hegel and his staff have become involved in many water issues, including wildlife conservation, water conservation and management, and dam funding / maintenance. The exhibition ends with Nebraska railroads, highways, and trucks. The I-80 is of particular interest here. Senator Hegel and his staff had many opportunities to support the I-80 through maintenance, lane extension, and funding for related commercial opportunities.

The artifacts on display include the yellow toy model semi-track used in one of Senator Hegel’s campaigns, the toy model union Pacific train on the mounted truck presented to Hegel, and the Great Pratt River Road. Cross the I-80 near Kearney, Nebraska, which includes the Ephemera of the Archway Monument (now simply called the Archway).
