San Antonio (NewsNation now) — In a new study published in Nature, phthalate, a chemical used to keep plastics soft, and similar chemicals in foods purchased from McDonald’s, Burger King, Domino, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and Chipotre. It is clear that it was found.
The chemicals are also found in gloves used to handle food, and the authors of the study hypothesized that this could be the cause of pollution.
Given that more chemicals were found in burritos than in hamburgers, the concept of glove contamination seems to make sense. French fries, which are normally not touched at all, showed no contamination. However, this study did not reach a firm conclusion on that point.
Phthalates are associated with many health problems in children and adults. In adults, it is associated with everything from reproductive problems to endocrine problems. The National Institutes of Health cited the need to regulate phthalates in foods to protect the development of the child’s brain and associated the compound with ADHD and behavioral disorders.
According to the Washington Post, Efforts to obtain statements from the six chains involved in sampling have failed. The FDA acknowledges that it is aware of the findings, but has not issued a statement or taken action.
