Albuquerque, New Mexico (KRQE) – Albuquerque is growing and PNM is working to catch up. PNM aims to build a substation of approximately 21 acres along the north side of Sunport Boulevard by University Boulevard.
The substation was set up in what used to be an ale landfill in the city, which was closed in the 1960s. Since then, the city has removed hundreds of thousands of tonnes of garbage from the area, but it is still polluted. The PNM’s application to the city indicates that the company last year decided that a new substation was needed in this part of the town.
“We need something like this,” said Eric Chavez, a PNM spokesman. “Whenever the community grows, we need to add more electricity, right? The more power we have, the more reliable it is, and the more power we have for our customers.”
It is unclear how much power the $ 35 million substation will supply, but PNM said it is needed for growth in southeastern Albuquerque. This area is known as Mesa del Sol Orion Center, Aerospace facility.
“The region and the whole of New Mexico are constantly growing, right? And that’s what we’re very proud of, and we’re sure that every customer is taken care of and everyone is credible. We just want to make sure we have a high and cost-effective power, “says Chavez.
According to the application documents, the unmanned substation also serves as a backup in the event of a power outage and has little impact on traffic. According to the document, the new facility is behind a 14-foot-high wall and can only be seen from the university.
The land on which the substation will be located is now the property of Sunport.
“This land is an easement between PNM and Sunport. In exchange for the easement, PNM will clean up old landfills, increase land utilization and better meet Sunport’s electricity demand. That’s what Sunport spokeswoman Stephanie Kitz said in an email. She went on to talk about the aesthetics of the facility for travelers coming to Sunport and said they weren’t worried.
The project will take place in front of the city’s Development Review Board during a public meeting on Wednesday. PNM hopes to begin construction in early 2022.
