The COVID-19 enforcement team, launched in August, used police officers to catch violators who violated the rules for quarantine, face covering, and large group meetings. According to HPD, the review revealed multiple violations of the department’s overtime policy, launched an investigation, and forced the police chief to shut down the team.
“I think the real problem is what the police will do in the future,” said Shannon Alibad, chairman of the police committee.
Alibad said there were many unanswered questions.
There is no word on how long the suspension will last, or how it will affect future enforcement efforts of COVID-related orders by HPD.
Alibado said HPD Chief Susan Ballard did the right thing by suspending the COVID enforcement team in the light of the investigation.
“It’s up to her department to further investigate and investigate why these cops worked so overtime. What’s behind the many approvals of these? Did they do it right? That’s right. Did you know that these are the questions I think the chief has internally to his boss, but the committee also has those follow-up questions. “
The review revealed overtime breaches and showed that at least two police officers had accumulated 300 hours of overtime in five weeks. Officers who volunteered to work on the COVID enforcement team were paid using federal CARES law funding.
The HPD said officers and supervisors who violated the rules would be disciplined.
So who will enforce the pandemic rules now that the special enforcement team has resigned?
SHOPO Chairman Malcolm Lutu said he would hold HPD patrol officers accountable.
“We want to guarantee to the general public that we are working. We will do our best to serve every phone we receive. And hopefully I hope the public understands it, “Rutz said.
Lutu said the COVID enforcement team allowed police officers to focus on regular police calls. Having to deal with COVID-19 violations, such as quarantine breakers, large group gatherings, and people without masks, puts an additional burden on police officers.
