Riverside, California 2021-05-08 18:20:50 –
Police shot deadly a homeless man allegedly aimed at a police officer south of downtown Riverside on Saturday morning. According to Riverside Police spokesman Ryan Railsback, it happened around 8:20 am when police officers tried to contact a homeless man at 3700 blocks on Elizabeth Street.
Officers were part of a departmental public security team consisting of social workers and law enforcement officers.
According to Railsback, the team checks the area frequently because people who are experiencing homelessness visit it frequently.
The arrest was captured in a video when a spectator saw it in Lancaster last week. Jonathan Gonzalez reports on NBC4 News on Friday, May 7, 2021.
According to Railsback, police officers approached the man while other city officials remained behind the patrol vehicle. He said the homeless man began to leave before turning around, pulling out his pistol and pointing it at the police.
“Then there were police officers involved in the shooting. The suspect was taken to a local hospital and later injured and died,” Railsback said.
No one was injured in the shooting. Police said a pistol was found next to where the homeless man was shot. Railsback said the man had not yet been identified, but explained that he was Hispanic and looked like his twenties. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office will lead the shooting investigation.
