Virginia State Police are investigating reports of four people being killed and three more injured in gunshots heard shortly before the collision on Interstate 95 in Henrico County earlier Wednesday.
Police said in a news release that the crash occurred on National Highway 301 elevated before 2 am.
A northbound Chevrolet Impala ran off the road and hit a guardrail along the median. Impala passed through the median strip into the southbound lane, where it collided with Tesla. Tesla then collided with an empty van parked in the far right southbound lane as part of the active highway work zone. Impala now rests on the roof of the southbound lane.
All five of Impala were thrown out of the car and police said four had died on the scene. One was taken to the hospital with a life-threatening injury. Two guns were recovered from the scene, police said.
The two Tesla were seriously injured and taken to the hospital. According to police, the German Shepherd, who fled in the crash while riding a Tesla, was returned to his family.
No highway worker was injured in the accident.
