Rome (AP) — Pope Francis permanently dismissed a Polish bishop who had been expelled from the parish a few months ago while waiting for a Vatican investigation to cover up a case of sexual abuse by a priest.

Edward Janiac’s resignation as Bishop of Kalisz suggests that the Vatican was able to substantiate at least some of the elements of the documentary’s accusations of sexual abuse in Poland.

Francis accepted Janiac’s resignation on Saturday, confirming Lodz’s archbishop Gruzegorz Lis as a temporary manager of the parish. Janiac is 68 years old, well below the bishop’s normal retirement age of 75 years old.
