Fresno, California 2021-05-04 21:25:03 –
The city has been providing an on-demand transportation service called transPORT for over a year.
But on Saturday, transPORT began using technology from its popular carpooling company, Uber.
Uber officials say they have similar partnerships in four other locations.
The new partnership is advertised at bus stops and fixed-route buses in the city.
“We’re just using their software,” said Richard Tree, Porterville Transit Manager. “Basically, we pay a monthly fee and software as a service type arrangement, but you can find our service in the Uber app.”
Tree used the Uber app to book a trip to Target on Tuesday morning.
When to pick up, what to ride (one of the city’s new 7-seater electric vans), who the driver is (Porterville Transit driver), and how passengers rate it. I knew if I was there.
Two riders participated along the way, including Ferecita Gonzalez.
She booked the trip over the phone and paid in cash.
Both are options for riders who are not using the app.
“It’s very convenient,” Gonzales said. “very helpful.”
Gonzales wants the service to extend to other communities in the South Valley.
It may happen soon, but it is currently available in Porterville, East Porterville, and Strathmore.
According to the tree, riders can expect to be picked up within 15 minutes of booking the trip.
“If you want to see a doctor and you don’t have much time, this type of service is perfect for services that you know are flat-rate, easy to travel by jumping to the app. I can’t guess because it takes. “
The tree says passenger numbers have grown rapidly since the city’s on-demand service was launched.
The contract with Uber is two years, but due to its success and efficiency, on-demand services will continue, he says.
“We really think this mode of service competes well with cars,” Tree said. “I think it’s our experience that people are drawn to this kind of service rather than waiting for 40 minutes at the bus stop, and there could be 20 to 30 people in the pre-COVID. “
Porterville Transit transportation costs $ 3 per rider per trip.
It operates from 6 am to 9 pm on weekdays and from 8 am to 8 pm on weekends.
I need a mask for the time being.
