Portland Parks and Recreation focuses on planting more trees in the hottest areas of the city, primarily in the eastern part of the Willamette River.

The city hopes that planting more trees will not only help the environment, but also provide more shade to the people and grow the city’s canopy as the summer heats up.

“All Portlanders felt the impact of another record year due to the extreme heat,” said Carmen Rubio of the Portland Parks Commission. “And science shows that trees play an important role in the fight against climate change. One way to cool our city and mitigate these effects is to plant large growing trees. is.”

After registering online, people can pick up a bucket of trees, root coverings and watering at one of the city’s five drive-through events. Free delivery is available to residents of the Centennial, Glenfair and Sumner districts. City workers also deliver and plant trees for those in need.

Trees cannot be planted in pots or streets. They should be used on private land, around apartment buildings, or in nearby shared spaces.
