Terrell Johnson killed by police in 2017
KOIN, Oregon — A family of men shot dead by Portland police four years ago reached a settlement with the city on Tuesday.
Terrell Johnson faced a mental health crisis the night he was shot by a police officer May 10, 2017 at Southeast Flavel MAX Station.
According to witnesses, the 24-year-old man behaved irregularly and threatened people.
The first to arrive at the station was Jacob Howell of the Westlin Police, but Johnson escaped without listening to him.
Officer Azir and Adjutant Azir followed Johnson and walked along the MAX track to the north of Fleber Street at 92 South East. Johnson was armed with a universal knife, and as he approached, Officer Azir went to Johnson. I fired multiple shots.
Police and paramedics provided immediate treatment, but Johnson died on the spot. According to police at the time, Johnson was homeless and his mother had issued a stay-at-home order to him.
However, his mother, Alicia Johnson, filed an illegal death proceeding against the city of Portland in 2019. The $ 600,000 settlement is one of the largest settlements in Portland’s history.
Johnson’s agents were Juan Chavez and Alex Meggitt, lawyers at the Oregon Judicial Resources Center.
Mayor Ted Wheeler’s office declined to comment, but said the settlement agreement would be considered by the city council in July.
