KOIN, Oregon — Penny Harrington, a longtime unit of the Portland Police Department, died at the age of 79.
Penny Harrington was the first female detective, sergeant, lieutenant, and captain of the Portland Police Department. She was later appointed chief and became the first female chief in history of a major police agency in the country.
The current PPB Chief Chuck Ravel confirmed the news in two tweets on Friday morning. In a tweet, Ravel said Harrington had influenced women across the country during his tenure as chief and throughout her rest of her life.
“During this difficult time, we express sympathy for her family and friends,” Ravel said.
This is a developing story.
