Las Vegas (FOX5)-Many Christmas trees are popping up across the valley. If you buy this year, be prepared to pay more.
“$ 85 will be the cheapest tree,” said Justin Powers, a Michigan vendor who has been selling trees in Las Vegas for over 20 years.
His tree in Michigan is still about eight years away from maturity, so he was looking for a producer to sell to him all year round.
“This year we had to procure trees from everywhere possible because of the huge shortage,” he said.
Due to the high cost of transporting trees and supply chain issues, this supply chain issue dates back more than a decade.
In 2008, the price of wood bottomed out.
According to Powers, many growers stopped planting and others simply planted fewer seedlings. “Producers were willing to invest in 10 years of growth to get paid,” he said.
It will take that long for the tree to be tall enough to hit the market.
This year, Powers only sold blue spruce and Serbian spruce, and even those trees were hard to find or too expensive at the wholesale level.
“I didn’t want to look up the price. I just want to make a profit,” he said.
Powers Tree Lot is located on Flamingo Road near Fort Apache Road and is open.
