President Trump rescinded Biden’s AI executive order

During his first day in office, President Donald Trump rescinded a 2023 executive order signed by former President Joe Biden that sought to reduce AI’s potential risks to consumers, workers, and national security. Biden’s executive order directed the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to author guidance that helps companies identify — and correct — flaws in their models, including biases. The executive order also requires developers of AI systems to share the results of security tests with the US government before releasing them to the public. Critics allied with Trump say the executive order’s reporting requirements are onerous and effectively force companies to reveal trade secrets. During the campaign, Trump promised policies that would “encourage the development of AI based on free speech and human development” – but refused to elaborate.
