Princess Mako of Akishino married a commoner, divided public opinion, and lost the throne in a union that was more than three years late due to an economic conflict involving her new stepmother.

The palace said the marriage document between Mako and Kei Komuro was submitted on Tuesday morning.

The couple makes a statement in the afternoon, but there are no wedding receptions or other celebrations.

The palace noticed that Mako was suffering from a stress disorder due to negative attention to the couple.

Mako and Komuro are college classmates and graduated from law school in New York.

Mako had previously turned down a dowry that qualifies him to leave the imperial family.
