Las Vegas (KLAS) — Over the past few months, companies have struggled to fill the job openings. Currently, the Courtyard Homeless Resource Center is implementing a new strategy for combining guests and work.
About a month ago, Chicanos por la Causa, which oversees the operation of the courtyard, integrated its workforce development program. They say there are many stereotypes that prevent homeless people from getting a job, but they want to work.
Quentin Mack is a courtyard facility management coordinator, but not always.
“I’m from New York, I had $ 400 in my name,” Mack said. “I got on the Greyhound bus.”
Mack is a courtyard success story where homeless guests are given the opportunity to volunteer and get a job when the position opens.
“It’s great to give back. It’s great to be able to have a positive impact on the community and feel good,” Mack said. “It makes me feel worthwhile and can be a positive citizen.”
The courtyard works hard to hire guests, but sometimes those opportunities are rare and in between.
Frank Gallardo, who oversees the recently launched workforce development program, says he wants to match individuals with many jobs.
“It would be great if an opportunity opened here, but if it doesn’t open here, we would like to work with various employers to make it easier to move to work opportunities as well as the courtyard. “I will,” said Gardo.
They are currently helping 20 people get ready for work and are getting essential items such as IDs and social security cards.
“We are working on this in many ways,” Gardo said. “We have guests ready to move to employment opportunities, but we want to ensure many of those barriers, yes, we are dealing with them at the same time. “
Gallardo says providing jobs to the homeless can stimulate the economy, and some employees who have turned from former guests to employees are preparing to buy a home.
Mack calls his work a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and keeps paying for it.
“There is no hope there, but there is a lot of hope here,” Mack said. “I think everyone deserves this opportunity.”
The Courtyard Resource Center wants to expand this program. They are looking for employers and organizations to work with.
They say it is a community effort to fill these jobs and remove the barriers that lead to the homeless.
