3 killed in Georgia house fire as multiple propane tanks explode

Three people were killed and three injured in a fire early Saturday morning at a home near Auburn, Georgia, after multiple propane tanks exploded, officials said.

Firefighters responded to reports of an explosion at a home on Hidden Acres Road in the Winder neighborhood just after midnight, trapping multiple people, Barrow County Emergency Services said on its Facebook page.

“There was an explosion in the house” when firefighters arrived shortly after midnight, Barrow County Fire Chief Alan Schumann told news outlets.

Schumann said the house was destroyed in a fire. Two patients were taken by ambulance and a third by helicopter to a local hospital, according to Barrow County Emergency Services. Their status was not confirmed.

Three people were found dead in the home, according to Barrow County Emergency Services. Authorities have not released the names of the victims.

“This was a very tragic event, with lives lost and others injured,” Schumann said. We also want to remind the public that storing propane cylinders in their homes or other structures is extremely dangerous.”

When the fire was brought under control, multiple propane cylinders were found in the home, which caused the explosion, Barrow County Emergency Services said.

The Barrow County Emergency Services Fire Department, in cooperation with the Georgia Fire Department and the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, is leading an investigation into the incident.
