Lawrence, Massachusetts. (WHDH)-Faculty and staff will protest the rise of violence at Lawrence High School on the same day that elected officials hold emergency meetings to deal with frequent battles.
High school members, along with members of the community associated with Mayor Lawrence Kendris Basquez, walked in just before the morning bell after more than 20 brawls broke out on campus in recent weeks, with teachers and staff. You may be injured and some students may be prosecuted.
Basquez also convened an emergency meeting of the city council and school committee at 7 pm on Monday to discuss school safety and the future of state administration for Lawrence Public Schools.
“I also invited the director and commissioner to attend this conference and listen to your concerns,” he said.
Cynthia Paris has blamed recent violence for tight adjustments when returning to class a year after distance learning.
She brought more police to the campus and adjusted the student’s schedule to curb the fighting.
However, the Lawrence Teachers Union states that more needs to be done to support the students.
“The school department was unable to meet the social and emotional needs of traumatized students,” said Kimberly Barry, president of the Lawrence Teachers Union. “We cannot immediately return to the test without efforts to rebuild the school community, ignoring the problems students bring to school. They are children and we value them. You need to invest in staff and services to let you. “
Some parents have asked Paris to resign, while others want to end state control over Lawrence’s school.
“We are a poor, marginalized community. This is not the fault of our parents,” said Joshua Alba, a member of the school committee. “This is due to the school committee, and parents haven’t said anything about how the district manages things.”
