When the company’s prize management system (SAM) registration expired, Harold Sargus, a consultant at the NBDC Procurement Technical Support Center (PTAC), intervened to secure a Universal SAM update. Without it, Universal would not be able to receive invoice payments sent to government customers or qualify for new businesses with government prospects.
With over 40 years of Army National Guard experience and before retiring as Brigadier General, President James L. Murphy has been running Universal since 1959.
His son and CEO Todd Murphy acquired the company in 2016. He has joined committees of several international media surveillance organizations, specializing in media measurement, copyright law, and US law affecting media use.
Todd Murphy said he knew about NBDC and its services, but this was the first time Universal had benefited from the expertise that NBDC provided to its clients.
“Harold handled the error between the Small Business Administration (SBA) and SAM, managed the incomprehensible instructions from the federal government, and led us across the finish line,” he says. “Without Harold’s knowledge and dedication, he would not have been able to continue dealing with government customers or consider future contracts.”
Murphy says he has since recommended NBDC to the owners of other small businesses. “I don’t know how small businesses can manage what seems to be as easy as updating a SAM without the help of a service expert like NBDC,” he says.
Murphy states that Universal is interested in continuing its relationship with NBDC. “One of the areas that small businesses always need help is responding to a federal request for proposal (RFP),” he says. “It’s hard to put them together, to say the least. If NBDC helps us respond to RFPs, we’re much more likely to win more business.”
