Pueblo — A furnace exploded at a Pueblo steelworks, injuring seven workers and seriously injuring three.
After Saturday’s explosion at the EVRAZ Pueblo Steelworks, all seven were able to walk and survive, said Dave Light, vice president of operations.
Two seriously injured workers were hospitalized for respiratory damage. One-third were hospitalized with hand and face burns, KKTV reported.
Firefighters received news of the explosion around 6 pm
“We tried to find as many victims as possible, arrange ambulances, and triage everyone to see what’s inside the building,” said Keith Miller, Deputy Fire Chief of Pueblo.
A failure in the cooling system of the furnace used to melt the steel could have caused the explosion, Miller said.
According to the company’s website, Chicago-based EVRAZ is a leading manufacturer of rail and large diameter steel pipes in North America.
