As you drive the 17th Ave SW, you’ll notice that the upcoming unicorn bar has a “punk rock flea market” spray on the exterior walls. And the truth is, you should be excited!
A Facebook event confirms that the White Center will house an eclectic collection of artists and merchants on Saturday, September 18th and Sunday, September 19th. For masked outdoor events, take advantage of the 9832 17th Ave SW parking lot, formerly Magic Lane.
In the early 2000s, Josh Okrent and a group of friends found and cleaned up an abandoned bar under the Low-income Housing Institute in exchange for space use.Starting with the profits of the institute, the group officially started the second in the country Punk rock flea market In 2005, and 16 years later, Josh continues to donate a portion of the proceeds from all events to LIHI.
After a day in Belltown and a long stay in Wall, the market crossed the spot and LIHI decided to divert the space to an emergency homeless shelter. In the next few years, the flea market used a variety of locations, including the 2017 large installments at the Seattle Center backed by KEXP and the Vera Project.
But in true punk fashion, organizers felt that the size and structure of 2017 didn’t reflect their values and wasn’t the direction the group wanted. Rethinking the underground beginnings of DIY and anti-enterprise, some of the following were held at Kings Hall in the central district. PRFM had planned two events in the hall in the spring of 2020, but of course they were canceled and then the hall was closed.
Okrent offered a full refund because the vendor prepaid the stalls, but most refused-knowing that the flea market would be back. More than half of the vendors this weekend are those who trust Josh and have been waiting sincerely and patiently. So when unicorn owners Adam Heimstadt and Kylie Wilson extended their offer to use their lots, Josh jumped at the opportunity, and this weekend makes history.
From noon, you can find unique treasures, either handmade or in a carefully selected collection. Highlights include vegan leather bondage gear (oh, behave!), Taxidermy creatures, rock souvenirs, and, of course, vinyl records.Incredibly talented artists and innovative artisans will be the focus, including some personal favorites Pazu When Underground archive..
Due to Covid’s restrictions, there will be no live punk rock this year, but DJs will be able to spin all day and try out lots of food trucks.
So, put on your nifty masks and vests and act to be too cool for us to get to know each other at the punk rock flea market this weekend!
