In digital terms, transparency is usually a one-way window where government agencies and large corporations can see us while keeping us in the dark about their tactics. Claire Virtual of King’s College London calls this “zombie transparency” and instead raises a “fundamental secret”. In what is sometimes read as Heidegger’s riffs, Virtual does not oppose the notions of transparency and secrecy, but rather “essentially connected, sharing important functions, separable only by extreme means, and considerable. There is a risk. ” Perhaps in simple terms, we need access to both the ways in which privacy is possible and the access to the powers that shape our lives (and the potential to achieve alternatives in modern society). ..
