Affordable Homes Are Attacked In Florida
Editorial by President Ellie Lambert
Greater Tampa REALTORS®
For decades, Florida citizens and Florida REALTORS® have stood together with firm respect and consensus on the crucial importance of providing affordable housing to poor Florida families. In 1992, this historic partnership was formalized by the Legislature with the creation of the State Housing Initiative Program, which created a dedicated trust fund solely to support housing programs. The money of the housing trust fund comes from part of the stamp duty levied on all real estate transactions. For nearly 30 years, the State Housing Initiative Program has received $ 2.6 billion from a housing trust fund and has helped 217,000 households, including down payments and closure costs.
Last week, Senator Wilton Simpson and Speaker of the House Chris Sprawls moved to break this long-standing trust and commitment to affordable housing that it represents. The currently drafted HB5401 and SPB2512 permanently redirect two-thirds of the housing trust fund to sea level rise and sewage infrastructure projects each year. These actions will break Florida’s 1992 sacred promise to make affordable homes a permanent and sacred priority.
The idea of permanently redirecting two-thirds of the housing trust fund violates the sacred agreement signed in 1992. These funds are in great need of housing-related support for Florida citizens for families, children, the elderly, disabled Floridians, and first-time pandemic responders. If these two measures are passed, they will reject the essential workers who survived. They were our first and last line of defense last year, with one less option to secure housing, such as down payments and rental assistance.
