Our port is the third largest in the country and is the state’s major economic driver.
Corpus Christi, Texas — The Port of Corpus Christi is celebrating a major achievement by announcing that it has set a new tonnage record in the first six months of 2021.
Overall, our port is the third largest in the country and the state’s major economic driver.
Impressive, but consider this:
When it comes to gross tonnage, nothing beats Corpus Christi Port. In fact, in that respect, it is the largest port in the United States.
The proof is in the numbers.
During the first six months of this year, the port moved more than 80 million tonnage of cargo, more than half of which arrived just in the last quarter.
Both are POCC records.
Further subdivided, exports of liquefied natural gas, agriculture and crude oil all increased last year. In fact, crude oil exports averaged 1.58 million barrels a day.
According to Chief Financial Officer Kent Briton, this means that more than half of US crude oil is exported from here.
“In the first half of this year, an average of about 58% of total US crude oil exports flow here at Corpus Christi,” says Britton. He added that in June the number reached a record high of 61%.
Some of the good news may be due to the continued recovery of the global economy from the COVID-19 pandemic, but Britton says it’s more than that. Infrastructure investment also plays an important role in maintaining the competitiveness of the people who use our port.
He believes that what is good for the harbor is good for the region.
“Economic development here at Corpus Christi Port benefits not only the port, but also the cities, counties and surrounding areas by creating new jobs,” says Britton. “There is a saying,’The ebb and flow of the tide lifts all ships,’ and we truly believe it. We take the region’s role as an economic development engine very seriously. . “
In the future, plans to deepen and expand the Corpus Christi channel continue, and the project is expected to be completed in late 2023.
