Red Cross blood banks in Southern Nevada near empty amid shortage | News – Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas, Nevada 2021-10-07 21:25:00 –

Las Vegas (FOX5)-There is an urgent demand for blood across the country and here in the Las Vegas Valley.

According to the American Red Cross, domestic inventories were the lowest at this time of the year since 2015. They say that the supply of certain blood types is less than a day.

The American Red Cross in southern Nevada said the shelves carrying O-positive blood were completely empty. The shelves holding O-negative blood should be full, but each has only about 4-5 units.

Rachel Flanigan, Managing Director, said that in addition to what is normally donated, about 10,000 additional units will need to be collected each week for a month to make up for the shortfall. They said they needed a particularly rare blood type.

“For rare blood types, for diverse blood types, we want to be able to save as many lives as possible, so please join us,” says Flanigan. “The better the match, the more chances we have to donate. This is great for us. Each donor can save up to three lives.”

Mr. Flanigan also said that the COVID-19 pandemic occurred at the same time as the decrease in blood donors.

“In August, the number of delta variants in COVID-19 cases surged significantly, reducing donor turnout by about 10%, which reduced blood donations and provided blood for 5-10 days nationwide. I try to keep it in, and for some types it’s worth less than a day, “she said.
