JD Martinez and Rafael Devers each played a Grand Slam, beating the Boston Red Sox on Saturday 9-5 against the Houston Astros in Game 2 of the American League Championship series.
Martinez gave the Red Sox a 4-0 lead in the first inning, and Devers doubled the team’s advantage in the second inning. The explosion made Boston the first team in post-season history to record two Grand Slams in a single match.
Enrique Hernandez has launched ALCS’s third homer and postseason fifth franchise to help the Red Sox save the first two game splits in the Best of Seven series. Game 3 will take place on Monday in Boston.
Nathan Eovaldi (2-0) had more than enough attacks after allowing 5 hits and 3 runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Boston got in shape early by loading the base before Martinez put a fastball 1-0 from rookie Luis Garcia (0-1) on the right wing wall. The Grand Slam was the first Red Sox player to play in Game 3 of the 2018 ALCS since Jackie Bradley Jr.
Boston continued to put pressure on the second inning after Kevin Plawecki took a walk away from Garcia, who had been sent off due to right knee discomfort. After Jake Odorizzi saved Garcia and allowed both Christian Arroyo and Hernandez to singles, Devers sent a 1-1 cutter to the right-wing wall.
Hernandez continued his Sterling postseason in the fourth inning by crushing the 2-1 splitter from Odorizzi over the left wing wall. Homer was his fifth in the postseason and tied Todd Walker (2003) and David Ortiz (2004, 2013) for a franchise record.
Homer also pushed Hernandez’s total base mark to 35. It finished second with Daniel Murphy (2015) in a postseason stretch of seven single-season games. Carlos Beltran had 38 people in 2004.
Houston responded in the fourth inning with the favor of Kyle Tucker’s two outs, RBI double and Yuli Gurriel’s two-run single.
Eobaldi calmed down and two reliefs filled the gap with Darwinzon Hernandez. Darwinzon Hernandez brought a solo home run to Gurriel and Jason Castro before Ryan Brasier led José Altuve to finish the match.
