Red Sox’s 2 grand slams lead to ALCS win over Astros – Honolulu, Hawaii

Honolulu, Hawaii 2021-10-17 05:05:00 –

Houston >> JD Martinez and Rafael Devers helped the Red Sox spend the good old days in Houston.

Boston became the first team to slug two Grand Slams in a postseason match. Martinez and Devers were connected in the first two innings of a 9-5 victory over the Astros today, which tied the AL Championship Series one game at a time.

Game 3 is Monday night in Boston. This is the first of the Red Sox’s three consecutive home games and has returned to the playoffs for the first time since winning the 2018 World Series after defeating Houston in the ALCS.

Martinez shot rookie Luis Garcia on the opponent’s field in the first two outs, winning 4-0. This was the first career playoff slam for the four All-Stars who started their careers at the Astros.

“In that situation, the pressure is on him. I can’t go through it,” Martinez said. “It’s the first inning. He’s on the base. He’s relaxing and looking for the pitch, so he’s trying to tell himself he can put the barrel down.”

Garcia was sent off with discomfort in her right knee after walking the first batter twice. Shortly after a 13-minute delay, Devers connected to one for Slam No. 2 while Jake Odorizzi took over and a right-handed player warmed up on the field.

“JD’s swing was huge to get us on board faster, and Raffy, the same thing, another grandma,” said bright red teammate Kike Hernandez. “Have it happened before?”

I have it now.

Hernandez, who called Friday night “en fuego” after Boston manager Alex Cora performed two homers in Game 1, was still on fire today. He had two hits highlighted by Solo Homer in the fourth inning.

Hernandez is the hottest batter of the postseason, leading all players with 16 hits, 5 home runs and 4 doubles. His nine extra-base hits were also the most in these playoffs, linking the Red Sox’s post-season records with Mike Lowell (2007), Kevin Youkilis (2007) and David Ortiz (2004 & 2007). His five home runs have had most to do with Ortiz (2004, 2013) and Todd Walker (2003) in the history of the team.

“The importance of the game is to allow me to stay focused and trapped,” Hernandez said.

Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi allowed five hits and three runs in the 5 1/3 innings.

The Astros won 5-4 in the series opener, gathering behind José Altuve and Carlos Correa’s home runs and fell into a big hole early in the hole.

“It’s a tough team,” Cola said. “They are moving away from returning to the game, so they are never happy.”

The Red Sox were 9-0 when Houston got on the board with two outs in four innings at Kyle Tucker’s RBI double. The Astros cut the lead 9-3 when Yuli Gurriel scored two more points in the single-to-light field.

Gurriel and Jason Castro added a solo home run off Darwinzon Hernandez’s 9th off before Ryan Brasier made it to the finals.

“In the end, it was a little too close for comfort, but we did it,” Hernandez said.

Dusty Baker said he was dealing with the issue “on and off”, although he didn’t know how long Garcia would go out, but he didn’t tell anyone.

“I didn’t bother him so much that I didn’t pitch,” Baker said. “We will make a decision within a few days.”

Garcia’s injury is another blow to the Houston team, who are about to reach the World Series for the first time in three years. The Astros are already upset after staff ace Lance McCullers Jr. was injured and removed from the roster of the series.

They won the championship in 2017. This is a crown contaminated by a scandal stealing a team’s signature.

When McCullers went out, Baker said the team would just have to “hit more” to absorb the loss. But now that rotation is even more depleted, it’s going to be an even taller job for this powerful lineup, where this postseason attack beats the Boston team over everyone.

So what is he looking for from his attack now?

“Do a little more,” he said, shaking his head and laughing. “I don’t have many choices, so I have to do a little more. That’s all.”

Odorizzi won the spot in this round after McCullers was injured after being removed from the Division Series roster due to the disappointment of his first season in Houston. He allowed 7 hits and 4 runs in 4 innings today, which is certainly not good news for a team lacking starters.

Tough up top

The top two batters in the Houston lineup, Altuve and Michael Brantley, have each hit a total of 2 to 17 in the series, including Altuve’s home run in Game 1.

warm up

Odorizzi was surprised when he rushed into the game and wasn’t growing when he was called by the mound.

“I’m sure it felt like eternity for everyone, but for me it was the fastest way to warm up,” he said. “Usually it takes more than 30 minutes.”

Cola was asked if the long delay affected the focus of his team.

“It didn’t really matter if it was an hour late,” Cola said. “We were trapped.”

next

Sunday is off before Jose Urquidy of Houston makes his first start in this postseason game March Monday. The Red Sox haven’t named the starter yet, but we need to make the starters Nick Pivetta and Eduardo Rodríguez available after neither is needed in the first two games.
