Charleston, West Virginia (AP) — West Virginia legislative leaders appointed a committee to take charge of the state’s constituency change process on Thursday.
Members of the Senate and House constituency change committees will host state-wide hearings this summer to hear feedback on redrawing political boundaries.
Parliamentarians decide how to divide the state from the current three into two parliamentary districts. West Virginia’s long-term depopulation has caused the state to lose a third parliamentary seat, according to US Census Bureau data released in April.
Senator Charles Trump (R-Morgan) chairs the Senate Committee, and Senator Gary Howell (R-Mineral) chairs the House Committee. Republicans make up the majority in both chambers. Republicans have a wide range of advantages in both committees.
A special session will be held later this year on this issue.
