The agreement, signed in September 2020, is the industry’s first agreement and marks an important step in the development of the fashion cycle economy.
Renewcell and H & M have collaborated in various ways since the establishment of Renewcell in 2012. From its role as a sounding ground for the concept of industrial-scale textile recycling to its investment in the company in 2017, H & M is an important partner in supporting Renewcell’s growth. According to Renewcell, the agreement signed in September 2020 does not have a direct economic impact on Renewcell, but establishes a strong indirect value chain for recycling products.
Under the agreement, Renewcell will supply H & M with virgin-quality Circulose fiber recycled from unusable textile waste at its new recycling plant in Sundsvall, Sweden, increasing its annual volume over a five-year period. This material is used by H & M in place of unused wood and cotton fibers in garments. Renewcell will begin construction of the new plant in 2021 and will begin its first deliveries in the first half of 2022, subject to the end of ongoing funding for the project.
Circulose is a branded pulp pulp product manufactured from 100% recycled fiber. Renewcell’s customers use Circulose as a raw material for the production of natural biodegradable fibers such as viscose and lyocell. By replacing unused fibers such as cotton with fibers made from circulose, fashion brands can significantly reduce the climate and environmental impacts caused by the extraction of raw materials and the generation of fashion waste. I will.
“This agreement proves that Circulose is a viable commercial product that can make a difference on a significant scale. We are a global industry that takes that word back into action to change fashion. We are proud to take the next step in our long-standing relationship with our leader, H & M. This kind of partnership will be a model for how fashion brands can integrate innovation to reduce adverse climate and environmental impacts. I believe, “said Patrik Lundström, CEO of Renewcell.
“In continuing our long-term partnership with Renewcell, this agreement is an important milestone not only for H & M, but also for the wider industry in terms of the large-scale availability of recycling products like them. To reach the 2030 goal of recycling or procuring all materials in a more sustainable way, adopt the use of materials such as Circulose, which will be a core part of the future materials portfolio. We need to make sure that, “said Blanc, Head of Sustainability at Pascal H & M.
