Hampton Roads, Virginia (Wavy) — If you’ve noticed longer pickup and drop offline around the school, you’re not alone. Schools in the district across Hampton Roads are experiencing this for several reasons.
Dr. John B. Gordan III, director of the Suffolk School, said increasing enrollment in their district and concerns about COVID-19 will play a role.
“Parents are, of course, very nervous about getting their kids on the bus, so most of the time we see three times as many parent drivers as in the past, and sometimes up to ten times as many,” Gordan said. Says.
Drone 10 captured a video of a long line formed at the end of a school day at Elephant Folk Elementary School.
Gordan says multiple schools in the district are seeing the same thing.
“One of my elementary school parents was planning to pick up and drop off 100 parents, 354 on the first day,” he said.
Gordan said the situation has improved after weeks have passed and mitigation measures have been taken.
“We have additional staff there and reward them for their time,” he said. “We are also trying to get additional officers.”
10 On Your Side contacted other districts of Hampton Roads and learned that Portsmouth also had increased volumes before and after boarding and disembarking times.
“More and more students are being taken to school instead of using the bus, but there are no reports of traffic spilling on the street,” said Lauren Norasco, a spokesman for Portsmouth Public School. “The government should follow the instructions from the school regarding pick-up and drop-off, adhere to traffic patterns during pick-up and drop-off, and contact the principal frankly if there are any changes to the family’s daily mode of transportation. Recommended. “
Hampton Public School reported that it saw the same thing.
“This is because traffic patterns may need to be adjusted (for example, where to get off and board, buses leaving school),” said spokesman Kelly Goral. “In addition, more families seem to be sending their children to school this year. There is no data on this, but this increase may be due to a pandemic.”
A Virginia Beach spokesman said he had received reports of traffic spills on local streets.
Overall, the school district warns parents to follow their school’s pick-up rules and be patient.
