Specialization in all areas requires long-term experience and training. Studies over the last few decades have demonstrated that the specialization of athletes and artists makes a difference in brain behavior while performing activities related to their area of expertise.
To detect the effects of media specialization in the brain, a research team from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Television Española Institute, and the University of Pablo de Orabide in Seville, Frontier of Systems Neuroscience Audiovisual content was presented to a group of media experts and a control group for the purpose of registering and analyzing their brain activity. This study covers what happens when audiovisual professionals view media works using three approaches: blink rate, electrical activity in the brain, and functional connectivity.
Researchers have observed that audiovisual cuts have a significant impact on media professionals and reduce blink rates, while non-specialists are similarly unaffected when looking at these cuts. They also found that the experience of media experts had a significant impact on the brain rhythm of the somatosensory area immediately after cutting. However, non-media experts show a great variety of Granger causality in terms of connectivity when compared to media experts whose visual cortex, somatic movements, and frontal lobe connections are much more concise.
Video and other audiovisual content is filled with cuts that artificially divide the content of the story. The movie may contain dozens or hundreds of cuts, but the viewer is still unaware of them. Previous studies conducted by the same team of researchers have shown that scenecuts affect the management of viewers’ attention. In this study, researchers aimed to discover how this effect differs among media professionals. The experience gained through years of experience in creating and manipulating media content has a long-term impact on how professionals process this content. Given that society is increasingly producing and consuming these types of content, we are interested in discovering the visual effects of these types of content on brain activity.
