When Jorge Morales moved from Jalisco, Mexico to the United States at the age of nine, he struggled with culture shock, assimilation into a new life, and learning English. He remembers seeing other English learners struggling at school and hoping for a more useful program in place.
As Morales grew up, he realized he wanted to help a student who was experiencing similar hardships. So he decided to become a teacher.
In 2016, Morales’ second year at Sunnyside, he was keen to find a more effective way and he was inspired by veteran teachers around him.He learned about the workshops offered by Central California World Language Project I decided to sign up at Fresno State University.
World Language Workshop for Teachers
This project is part of a state-wide initiative to improve access to high-quality world language education for kindergarten to high school educators. Both student teachers and experienced teachers can use resources to bring them into the classroom. The project, located at the School of Education and Human Development at Fresno State University Fresno, aims to provide targeted support for the needs of future teachers in the Valley, including those who speak Spanish and Mon languages. I am aiming for it.
Project Director Nancy Perez said: “And that’s what makes this project interesting and engaging for teachers, because they’re coming, learning, and practicing.”
This project will provide resources to all teachers, not just world language teachers. Since its inception in 2014, the project has trained and supported more than 1,000 teachers.
Historically, workshops were held directly, but COVID-19 has virtually shifted the workshop.Project offers 30 free online workshops From July 27th to March 12th..
The workshops are effectively offered, so the project reaches teachers nationwide and around the world. There were participants from Chile, Colombia and the United Kingdom.
To meet the needs of a diverse audience, the project offers a wide range of topics for this year’s workshop.
In this project, we are holding workshops on educational strategies in new classrooms, such as “Classroom Design in the 21st Century” (such as “Classroom Design in the 21st Century”).July 27) And “Focusing on Student Growth: Lessons for PLC” (October 5th), And workshops on digital programs and apps such as “Adobe Sparks / Blooket” (Adobe Sparks / Blooket)July 29) And “Jamboard / Canva” (November 2).
Registration is required for each individual workshop. Teachers attending the 40-hour training will receive 2.5 Continuing Credits from Stanford University.
Morales first attended the Central California World Language Project workshop in 2016. He said he decided to attend the project’s technology workshop because of the importance of technology in the classroom. Fast forwarded for 5 years and is currently promoting technology workshops for other teachers.
“We use technology 80% of the time in the classroom,” says Morales. “My warm-up is on Google Slides, and the tests and quizzes are on Google Forms. I’m doing audio recordings and using Adobe Spark, Quizlet, and Kahoots.”
He said the workshop is more than just gaining knowledge, it’s a way to network with other teachers.
“By attending the workshop over the years, I learned how to become a teacher that students really need in class. I can see myself among the students. I learned how to be someone more than a teacher. “
