Ripon-Ripon police say scammers are targeting people who have been weakened by the recent bad weather.
About 9,000 Alliant Energy customers Power was lost in the city of Ripon on Wednesday nights and Thursday mornings as a storm knocked down trees and brought down power lines.
Currently, the Ripon police station says it has received reports of fraudsters calling residents disguised as employees of the power company’s amputation department. Fraudsters reportedly tell victims that it will take 30 minutes to make a payment or that the power supply to their home will be cut off.
Ripon police say that if you receive such a call, you should hang up immediately. Then contact your energy provider directly and ask about all types of payments.
The department is also calling on residents to scrutinize local contractors before hiring someone to help remove debris.
