Lincoln, Nebraska (KMTV) — Lincoln and Omaha have many state-of-the-art healthcare options for residents. But that’s far from the countryside of Nebraska.
According to a 2020 report from UNMC, all counties in Nebraska except Douglas and Lancaster are considered to be at least one type of primary health care deficiency area.
“Well, there is no doubt that the Nebraska countryside is suffering from a shortage of medical professionals,” said Ted Carter, President of the University of Nebraska. “Especially nursing, mental health, occupational therapists, physiotherapists.”
“They are lacking in all areas,” said Doug Kristensen, president of the University of Nebraska Kearney. “There are 17 counties without doctors.”
Many of the medical professionals working in these rural areas are aging and will soon retire.
President Carter and the four university prime ministers came up with the new idea of increasing the number of health workers in these rural areas.
They proposed to the Nebraska State Council to build a new rural health facility on the campus of the University of Nebraska Kearney.
President Carter has demanded $ 60 million from the approximately $ 1 billion US rescue grant that the state received from the federal government for the relief of COVID-19.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime money and you have to do it wisely. For small projects you don’t have to do it. You have to move the needle,” says Kristensen. “This will have a big impact on the Nebraska countryside, and it will also have a big impact on the Nebraska Medical Center, so as a university, no one else in the country is doing it this way.”
The new complex will be built just north of the Health Science Education Building, which opened in UNK in 2015.
Of all the students who studied healthcare at the facility, 85% stayed in the countryside of Nebraska.
“UNK’s history has taught us that when you take great students to the Nebraska countryside and put them on campus, they fall in love with the area,” said President Carter. I did. “When they do an internship in the countryside of Nebraska, they are very likely to stay in the countryside of Nebraska.”
“Now we are moving to the Health Science Education Complex on Steroids,” said Prime Minister Kristensen.
This also gives UNK students the opportunity to study and train in a variety of areas currently available only in Lincoln and Omaha.
“We see it as a great opportunity for students, but even better for Nebraska and the state as a whole,” says Kristensen.
“Then you don’t have to go to Omaha or Lincoln to complete the mammogram, because you train the technicians who provide that care in rural areas,” said Dr. Aaron Lanick, UNMC Family Medicine Rural Training Track Program Director. Stated.
Are there any concerns if you are not addressing your medical needs in rural areas?
“What happens is that people will move. People will further facilitate migration from the countryside of Nebraska, and that’s not good for the whole state. It’s a very difficult situation,” Kristensen said. ..
The new Rural Health Complex is one of a series of proposals made by the university to the Nebraska State Senate. The proposal will be rounded up to approximately $ 195 million for the COVID-19 Relief Fund.
All of these focus on workforce development, medical care, research, or innovation.
