Kyiv, Ukraine — A Ukrainian court sentenced a 21-year-old Russian soldier to life imprisonment for murdering Ukrainian citizens.
This is the first conviction of a war crime since the invasion of Russia three months ago.
Vadim Shishimarin pleaded guilty to shooting a 62-year-old civilian in late February.
Russian soldiers said he was ordered to do so.
A Ukrainian court said Sisimarin shot an unarmed Oleksandr Shelipov with an “AK gun.”
The decision was made when the United Nations stated that the war three months ago helped push the number of refugees around the world to record levels.
Sisimarin’s decision may be appealed within 30 days.
Over 100 million people around the world have been expelled from their homes.
The grind battle in Donbus, where Ukrainian and Russian troops are fighting town by town, forced many civilians to flee their homes.
