Moscow (AP) — Gunman, Russian city in Perm Eight people were killed and others were injured on Monday morning, according to the Russian investigative commission.
According to the Interior Ministry, the shooter was detained.
A Permian State University press said the perpetrators used so-called “traumatic” firearms. Such guns are designed to fire non-lethal rubber or plastic projectiles, but can be modified to fire other ammunition.
College students and staff were trapped in a room, and the college urged those who could leave the campus to do so. The state’s Tass news agency quoted an unnamed source of law enforcement agencies, saying some students had jumped out of a building window.
The number of injured was uncertain — reports varied from 6 to 14, and it was not clear if any of them jumped from the building and were injured.
Perm is about 1,100 kilometers (700 miles) east of Moscow and has a population of about 1 million. The university has about 12,000 students.
There was no immediate information about the shooter’s identity or possible motives.
In May, a gunman fired at a school in Kazan, killing seven students and two teachers.
