Russians assault cities in eastern Ukraine

Kyiv, Ukraine —Russian troops are throbbing in and around Lysychans’k city with a full-scale attempt to seize the last base of resistance. Luhansk Oblast, eastern Ukraine, The governor said on Saturday.

Ukrainian fighters have spent weeks defending the city and preventing it from falling into Russia, as neighboring Sieviero Donetsk did a week ago. The Russian Defense Ministry recently said the military controls an oil refinery on the edge of Lysychans’k, but Governor Luhansk Oblast reported on Friday that the fight for the facility was ongoing.

“On the final day, the occupiers fired from all kinds of weapons available,” Haidai said on Saturday in a Telegram messaging app.

Donetsk, which is adjacent to Luhansk, is the two states that make up the Donbas region, and Russia has been concentrating on attacks since it withdrew from northern Ukraine and the capital Kieu in the spring.

Pro-Russian separatists have held parts of both states since 2014, and Moscow recognizes all of Luhansk and Donetsk as sovereign republics. The Syrian government also acknowledged two areas of “independence and sovereignty” on Wednesday and said it would work to establish diplomatic relations with separatists.

In Slovyansk, the main city of Donetsk under Ukrainian control, four people were killed when Russian troops fired cluster munitions late Friday, Mayor VadymLyakh said on Facebook. He said the attacked neighborhood did not contain potential military targets.

Elsewhere, investigators combed debris from Russian airstrikes in a nearby residential area early Friday. Ukraine’s port of Odesa, where 21 people died.

Ukrainian prosecutor Iryna Venediktowa said investigators are recovering debris from missiles that struck an apartment in the small coastal town of Serhifka. She also said they were making measurements to determine the trajectory of the weapon.

“We are taking all the necessary investigative steps to identify the specific people convicted of this horrific war crime,” said Benedictova.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said three anti-ship missiles attacked a “normal house, nine-story building” that accommodates about 160 people. He said the victims of the Friday attack also included four members of the family staying at a “typical” seaside campsite.

“I emphasize: this is a deliberate direct Russian terrorist attack, not some mistakes or accidental missile attacks,” Zelensky said.

The British Ministry of Defense said on Saturday that air-launched anti-ship missiles generally do not have accurate accuracy with respect to ground targets. Russia is likely to be using such missiles due to the lack of more accurate weapons, he said.

The Kremlin has repeatedly claimed that Russian troops are targeting fuel depots and military installations rather than residential areas, but missiles have also recently attacked Kieu’s apartments and shopping malls in Clementuk’s central city.

On Saturday, Kremenchuk Mayor Vitaliy Maletskyy said the death toll from the mall attack had risen to 21 and one was still missing.

Ukrainian officials have interpreted the missile attack in Odesa in return for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the nearby Black Sea Island, which is symbolic and strategically important in the war that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

Moscow described their departure from Snake Island as a “good faith gesture” to help lift the block on grain exports.
