Boston (WHDH)-A rusty staircase near JFK / UMass MBTA station in Boston was demolished after a professor at Boston University died in an apparent 20-foot fall earlier this month.

According to investigators, David K. Jones, an associate professor of public health at the university, fled on September 11, but was later found dead under the stairs.

State police said the stairs had been closed for 20 months. It was blocked at both ends.

It is not clear how Jones accessed the stairs, and his death is under investigation.

Jones has survived by his wife and their three children.
