Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — At the Arizona Championships, the Sabino High School marching band won first place in the category for the first time. The Tucson Unified School District states that it is also the first band to win this award in southern Arizona.

AJ Cronin, a drum major in the marching band, said:

This championship was especially important for seniors in high school.

Sandra Guy, color guard captain, said:

Most members have been in the band for four years, but never exceeded third place in state competitions.

“We were like,’OK, maybe second place’ to reach the moment when we were in third place and didn’t hear the name called,” Kronin said. Please don’t call our name again. It was a sudden moment, “Oh, we’re just in first place.” “

“I kept telling everyone,’I’m very proud of you,'” Guy said.

Band director Sole Garland says he didn’t expect to win first this year. The only goal was to get better every week.

Sole Garland, band director at Sabino High School, said: .. “

He says it was the combination of diligence and talent that led Sabino High School to the top.

“There is something special about the students in this group. There is a work ethic that you can’t find many places,” Garland said.
