Sacramento (AP / CBS13) – Sacramento will welcome the National Women’s Soccer League expansion team in 2022.

In a wide conference call with reporters prior to tomorrow night’s league draft, NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird announced some major changes to the league, including how US football no longer controls NWSL.

With the addition of Sacramento, the league will have 12 teams. Racing Louisville will be participating in NWSL this season. Los Angeles Sacramento and Angel City FC will be joining us next season.

Details of the Sacramento franchise were not announced immediately, but the Republic of Sacramento, which will participate in Major League Soccer in 2023, has long been interested in expansion teams.

Management of the US Soccer NWSL was scheduled to end at the end of 2019, but has been extended until 2020. This change gives team owners more control over the league.

US Soccer, which has managed the league since its inception in 2013, will continue to invest in NWSL, Baird said. She characterizes this relationship as a “new chapter” and both sides are committed to the continued success of the league.

“We have a mutual interest in building the best women’s football league in the world, and that is the purpose of this new partnership,” said Baird. “And we want to continue to lead initiatives in the area of performance, such as improving and continuing to improve the standards of women’s football in the United States, such as sports science and coaching. They invest in our league. We will continue to do so as a future partner. “

The federation, which has invested an estimated $ 20 million in the league since its inception, will continue to pay salaries for US national team players assigned to the entire league, which is part of the national team collective bargaining agreement. Details on the relationship are still under consideration, but no significant reduction in federal funding is expected.

The league will be exempt from the NCAA this season, and drafted players will remain on the college team this spring and will be able to join the NWSL after the season. Some leagues have finished the fall season, but the pandemic has delayed the college season.

The NWSL Board has expanded the pool of players available to anyone who has run out of college qualifications for three years before the 2020-21 season. 49 players have declared a draft.

The NWSL 2020 season was closed in March due to the coronavirus. The league continued to host Challenge Cup tournaments in a bubble in Utah during the summer before a series of fall regional matches at the local market.

The league is planning a pre-season Challenge Cup this year, Baird said, but details have yet to be finalized. The regular season is scheduled to start in mid-May.
