Daniel K. Inouye Wayway, also known as Saddle Road, resumed traffic in each direction after authorities closed the highway due to a major wildfire in the area.
At around 5:45 pm on Saturday, July 17, Hawaii police announced that traffic to both Hilo and Kona could be resumed. However, HPD said the Old Saddle Road was closed to traffic between Daniel K. Inouyewayway and Mamala Hoa Highway (Route 190) due to the threat of a fire.
Officials said it was unclear at this time how long the closure would last. As far as safety permits, only local transportation from the Old Saddle Road / Mamala Hoa Highway intersection to Waikii Ranch is permitted.
